Abstract

Two hundred and sixty four strains (252 patients) of bacteria or fungi were isolated from 6, 957 CSF specimens at Wonju Christian Hospital during the years 1981 to 1990. The incidence of purulent meningitis was 1.5 per 1,000 admissions. Frequently isolated organisms were S. aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, S. Pneumoniae and N. meningitidis. The proportion of S. pneumoniae, N. meningitidis and H. influenzae were 20.9% of all isolated organisms. H influenzae was isolated only in less than 5-year old. Among the 189 medical record-available patients, 77 were found to have predisposing factors such as head trauma, or surgery, malignancy and respiratory infections. N. meningitidis, S. pneumonia?and H. influenzae were all susceptible to most of the commonly selected antimicrobials. Improvement was noted in 68.3% of 189 patients. Positive blood cultures were obtained in 16.0% of 131 patients, and positive direct examinations were 29.3-92.0% of 182 patients, depending on the organisms.
